Open Science
Clinical Psychology in Europe (CPE) takes good, transparent, reproducible, and open science very seriously. This means that all published papers will have underwent screening regarding to what extent they have fulfilled Transparency and Openness Promotion (TOP) Guidelines. The TOP Guidelines outline eight modular standards that can be implemented at three different livels (with Level 1 being the least, and Level 3 the most rigorous option). CPE is committed to following Levels 1 and 2 of the TOP standards (see the summary table below).
Authors should also consult the Implementation Guidelines for Authors below for information on what they need to do to ensure that their submission meets these standards
Transparency Standards

The guidelines summarized above concern any paper published in CPE that presents empirical data (whether quantitative or qualitative). Data, code, materials, and other documents should be safely and openly stored at the PsychArchives repository. Upon submission of a paper, authors will have to confirm that they have included appropriate statements (e.g., about the availability of data, code, materials, other documents, preregistrations) within their papers, and all papers will be checked regarding their adherence to the journal's adopted TOP standards outlined above. Authors should thus take great care to ensure that their papers meet those standards. Papers that do not meet the standards cannot be published in CPE.
Implementation Guidelines for Authors
1 Citation Standards
To meet this standard at the level implemented by CPE, the following is required:
- All openly available material (i.e., data sets, program code and other materials) reused in a publication should be cited in the text and listed in the reference section.
- In-text citations and references shoud be formatted according to APA style (7th edition). Examples:

2./3./4. Data, Analytical Methods (Code), and Research Materials Transparency
To meet these standards at the level implemented by CPE, the following is required:
- Authors must indicate in their submission whether the data, methods (code) used for analyses, and materials from the reported research are freely available.
- If data, code, or materials are freely available authors must specify where to access them.
5. Design and Analysis Transparency
To meet this standard at the level implemented by CPE, the following is required:
- Authors need to specify the reporting guidelines used in their submission. The guidelines recognized by the journal are specified in the journal policies (see CPE's Transparency and Reproducibility policy).
6./7. Study and Analysis Plan Preregistration
To meet this standard at the level implemented by CPE, the following is required:
- Authors must indicate in their submission whether the study and/or analysis was publicly preregistered. Preregistration requires a public file archive that guarantees the preservation of a time-stamped, immutable version of the study protocol/analysis plan (embargos for public access may be applied). Just uploading a study protocol to an OSF Project (for example) will not be considered as preregistration.
- If the study/analysis was preregistered, access URL(s) or DOI(s) have to be added to the submission that can be used by editors and reviewser to access the preregistration.
8. Replication
To meet this standard at the level implemented by CPE, the following is required:- Replications of previous work are explicitly welcomed by the journal if identified as such. Therefore, authors should clearly indicate (in their cover letter and abstract) if their submission is a replication study.
